Love Is in the Lawn: February Gardening Tips to Help Your Landscape Thrive

February is the month of love, and at Lawn Ranger, we believe there’s no better way to celebrate than by showing your landscape a little extra care. As winter begins to loosen its grip, this is the perfect time to prepare your lawn and garden for a beautiful spring ahead. From planting roses to refreshing turf grass, February offers plenty of opportunities to set the stage for a healthy, vibrant outdoor space.

February Is Prime Time for Roses

Roses have long symbolized love, making them a natural star of the season. February is an ideal time to plant or transplant rose bushes. Choose a location with full sunlight, well-draining soil, and plenty of airflow. When planting, be sure the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil. Avoid overcrowding by trimming nearby plants so your roses have room to grow and breathe.

Smart Watering Makes a Difference

Established roses typically don’t require heavy watering this time of year, but soil should remain consistently moist. Newly planted roses need more attention—deep watering will help roots settle in properly. As always, adjust watering based on rainfall and temperature to avoid soggy soil.

Prune, Feed, and Protect

February is the perfect month to prune and fertilize established roses. Proper pruning encourages strong growth and more blooms later in the season. Keep an eye out for yellowing leaves, which can signal black spot disease. Removing and discarding affected leaves helps prevent the spread and keeps plants healthy.

Perennials Still Have a Place

While fall is the preferred season for planting perennials, February is not too late. This is a good time for major planting projects, as long as soil moisture is monitored closely. Remove old or dead growth promptly to allow new shoots to emerge strong and healthy.

Revive Cool-Season Color

As we head toward March and April, cool-season bedding plants benefit from a boost of fertilizer. Plants like pansies are heavy feeders and may need extra nitrogen to stay vibrant. Whether you live in town or the countryside, these colorful plants add instant charm—just keep an eye out for deer in rural areas that might see them as an easy snack.

Turf Grass Needs Attention Too

Over-seeded lawns provide a lush green foundation for spring landscapes. Regular mowing is essential to keep rye grass healthy and prevent matting. Weekly mowing during this period helps maintain a clean, uniform appearance and encourages strong growth.

Care for Shrubs and Trees

Winter is an excellent time to apply horticultural oil sprays to shrubs prone to scale, including camellias, hollies, magnolias, privets, and euonymus. Gardenias can also benefit from oil sprays to control whiteflies. Tree planting season is winding down for balled-and-burlapped trees, but container-grown trees can still be planted successfully in the coming months.

Show Your Landscape Some Love

February is more than just Valentine’s Day—it’s a season of preparation, care, and growth. By giving attention to roses, lawns, shrubs, and trees now, you’re investing in a healthier, more beautiful landscape all year long. If you need help bringing your outdoor space to life, the Lawn Ranger team is always here to help.

Happy gardening, and happy Love Month!
