Keep Your Lawn Thriving This Summer

As temperatures rise across Southeast Texas, June is the perfect time to focus on maintaining a healthy, resilient lawn. Proper fertilization, pest management, and garden care now can help your landscape withstand the heat and stay beautiful all summer long.

Fertilizer: Fuel for a Strong, Healthy Lawn

One of the most important steps in lawn care is proper fertilization. A well-fed lawn develops stronger roots, better color, and increased resistance to drought, disease, insects, and heavy foot traffic.

However, more fertilizer doesn't always mean better results. Over-fertilizing can burn your grass and encourage unwanted problems such as diseases, insects, and weeds. Under-fertilizing can leave your lawn weak and vulnerable to stress.

Grass requires several nutrients for healthy growth, but the three primary nutrients found in most fertilizers are:

  • Nitrogen (N) – Promotes green growth and density
  • Phosphorus (P) – Supports root development
  • Potassium (K) – Improves overall plant health and stress tolerance

For the best results, choose a fertilizer appropriate for the season and your lawn's specific needs. If you're using a "weed-and-feed" product, carefully follow all label instructions. These products contain herbicides that can damage trees, shrubs, flowers, and other desirable plants if applied incorrectly.

Watch for Chinch Bugs

June's hot, dry conditions create the perfect environment for chinch bugs to become active. These tiny insects feed on grass by sucking plant juices, often causing significant damage before homeowners realize there's a problem.

Signs of chinch bug activity include:

  • Irregular patches of yellowing or brown grass
  • Areas that resemble drought stress despite adequate watering
  • Dead, straw-colored grass in sunny locations
  • Damage commonly found near sidewalks, driveways, and other heat-reflecting surfaces

Early detection is key. If you suspect chinch bug activity, treat affected areas promptly with a lawn insect control product labeled specifically for chinch bugs.

Rose Care in June

If you haven't fertilized your roses yet this season, now is an excellent time. Apply a quality rose fertilizer or a slow-release formula designed to provide nutrients over an extended period.

Roses require ongoing attention during the summer months. To keep them looking their best:

  • Maintain a regular disease and insect prevention program.
  • Remove weeds by hand and replenish mulch as needed.
  • Keep mulch 3–4 inches deep to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Remove and discard yellowing or diseased leaves to help reduce black spot and other fungal issues.

A little maintenance each week can make a big difference in the health and beauty of your rose garden.
