Do you have a sunburn?
At some point this summer, one of us will say: "I don't think I need to reapply sunscreen." And a few hours later we'll be standing in front of the bathroom mirror looking red. If this sounds familiar, welcome.
The good news is that most mild sunburns improve with time, hydration, moisturizing, and keeping the skin cool while it heals. Dermatologists recommend cool baths or showers, aloe vera-based moisturizers, drinking extra water, and avoiding additional sun exposure while your skin recovers.
So where does floating fit in?
Many guests are surprised to learn that the water inside a float tank is skin temperature, around 93.5 degrees. That means there are no pressure points from laying on a mattress, beach chair, or couch. Instead, your body is fully supported by the water, which can feel especially welcome when your skin feels tender and irritated.
That said, if your sunburn has open blisters, cracked skin, or is severe enough that a shower already feels miserable, it may be worth waiting until your skin calms down.
Until it does:
Drink some water.
Apply aloe vera.
Stay out of the sun for a bit.
Stop touching the peeling skin.
Seriously. Stop touching it.
Consider giving your nervous system a break, too.Because while we can't undo that afternoon by the pool, we can help you relax while your skin reminds you that sunscreen is, in fact, your friend.
