THE WOODLANDS, Texs - Look Out for Litter, The Woodlands Township’s popular summer litter scavenger hunt, kicks off with the start of summer vacation. Teens and children can participate in the free, fun, outdoor, family activity anytime from June 15 to August 15, 2016.

Recent rains drive home why even a small amount of litter on roads and pathways is too much. Rain washes litter from parking lots, streets and pathways into waterways as runoff. A few bits here and there become concentrated and contaminate waterways. Eighty percent of litter found in creeks, bayous and rivers traveled from locations on land.

This summer, there will be a special cigarette butt challenge. Some of the worst microlitter that contaminates waterways is cigarette butts. Bring your cigarette butt collection in plastic bags to The Woodlands Township Environmental Services office, located at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive. The Woodlands Township has an ongoing partnership with Terracycle® to recycle and compost them.

Look Out for Litter is as easy as 1-2-3.

Teens and children, ages 18 and under:

1. Simply pledge to pick up three pieces of litter per day for three weeks or join the Cigarette Butt Brigade.

2. Complete a daily log of the items or fill plastic bags with cigarette butts.

3. Submit the log, or bring bags of cigarette butts to The Woodlands Township Environmental Services office to receive a T-shirt (while supplies last) and be entered into a drawing for additional prizes.

For information on how to register and to print a litter log, please visit The Woodlands Township website at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/adoptapath or call 281-210-3800.
