HS Basketball Scoreboard: Oak Ridge Girls start district with close win

Oak Ridge 49, College Park 44

We’re all hoping 2021 is a comeback year after a miserable 2020. The first District 13-6A game of the new year nearly featured an impressive comeback victory. The War Eagles were able to hold on to their first district win of the season despite a spirited second-half performance by the Cavaliers.

Oak Ridge leaned on three-point shooting and defense in the first half. Balanced production from behind the arc gave the War Eagles a 20-9 lead at halftime. Oak Ridge kept it going at the beginning of the second half to initially keep College Park at bay. However, CP turned up the intensity and as shots stopped falling for The Ridge, the Cavs began to heat up and fought back with some big buckets.

College Park cut Oak Ridge’s lead to five with less than two minutes to go, but the War Eagles showed why they’re a team that has won 15 games so far this season, by holding on in a high-pressure situation.

CP’s Ara Odelowo led all scorers with 15 points, and Bobbi Bazzle grabbed 17 rebounds for the Cavaliers. Nikki Petrakovitz and Logan Fuller led the War Eagles with 11 points each in the win.

The Cavaliers needed a comeback to stay undefeated in the district through three games. A double-double from Drew Calderon helped lead the second-half turnaround. Calderon went for 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals in the win. For Oak Ridge, AJ Badger led his squad with 16 points.
