THE WOODLANDS, TX – We survived our first below-freezing night of this long Christmas weekend relatively unscathed (although we’ve definitely seen our fair share of plumbing trucks out on service calls), but tonight and tomorrow morning will be the more critical times for our pipes. Last night, we were coming off of a day that had approached 70 for a high; we won’t even break the barrier above freezing today, so the cold will have had an additional 24 hours to freeze your pipes. Long story short: keep them wrapped and your faucets dripping for a while longer.

Freezing temps will hang around awhile, so stay alert

The sun is bright today – in fact, the only clouds you may see will come wafting through this early evening and peaking overnight – as our high pressure and brisk winds keep things frigid enough to numb ungloved fingers and bring icicles to your tear ducts. The high temperature will tease us by staying one degree below freezing and heading back into the 20s before the sun sets. One bit of good news is that we’ve already passed the turning point of the windage, so each passing hour will become stiller; within a few hours, you can breathe easy knowing that your trees aren’t in immediate danger of being blown over. Ironically, you’ll be warmer at the indoor Ice Rink, which is featuring some special Character Performances throughout the day.

Christmas Eve Saturday will see the overnight clouds wandering away and another bright and sunny day. The winds will be down to normal levels, and by lunchtime we’ll be above the freezing mark, with the afternoon high hitting a positively sweltering 40 degrees. Enjoy the relative warmth, however, as with the sundown comes freezing temperatures again, with a rapid drop into the lower 20s before you tuck into bed to dream of sugar plums and steaming water. There are so many special dinners and worship services happening this evening that we can’t list them all here, but check out our comprehensive list on our Woodlands Online Christmas Guide!

On Sunday, Christmas morning will dawn bright and clear with just a few wisps of clouds. We’ll be out of the frozen zone by the time the presents are unwrapped and the brunch is preparing. If your pipes and plants have made it this far unscathed, take the day to refresh your precautions, as by early evening we’ll be back into below-freezing temperatures. If you’re feeling adventurous, bundle up and head over to Margaritaville for one of the Einstein’s Party Barge Holiday Cruises.

The steadily dropping temperatures and diminishing winds will hopefully make this the last below-freezing night of the year, but be warned that Monday might flirt with a low of 32 one last time. Thankfully, the lack of precipitation will keep the roads a lot less icy than they might be in these temperatures, so vigilant drivers should be able to travel post-Christmas in relative safety.

As the week between Christmas and New Year’s looms, however, be prepared for some weather that’s a lot warmer and wetter…
