THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Both tensions and comradery were at highs as coaches filled the Shenandoah Room at the Memorial Hermann Hospital for the SCFL drafts.

South County Football League President and Coach Rich Walters spoke on the palpable tension that kept the coaches constantly adjusting.

“What you do today affects the next four to five months,” said Walters. “We spend so much time with these kids and these families that it makes it a big deal of who you’re going to get.”

The deliberation of draftees led to a fair amount of commentary from coaches as steals and players dropping farther than anticipated helped to bring the replication of draft days to life.

The light muttering of a “good pick” or “stolen” from coaches picking around others instilled a deep sense of strategy and planning that comes with organizational development.

“It is really competitive,” noted Walters. “But at the same time, we are all here to help these kids get better and develop as football players.”

Teams that may seem like rivals on the surface were able to come together for the common cause of athlete development and future opportunities for the next generation.

“The life lessons in football are so valuable,” said Walters. “Getting knocked down and getting back up are the life lessons that we try to teach.”

With final rosters settled the steps can now begin towards building relationships between teammates and the mentorships that will carry teams towards success.

Both players and their parents can look forward to the full slate of SCFL events with Scrimmagepalooza taking place on August 26 and the first official games to be played on September 2.
