How to Fix a Leaky Faucet in The Woodlands, TX

Shut off the hot and cold water valves under your sink. Turn on the faucet to release any remaining pressure and water in the line.

Most faucets have a small screw under a cap or cover on the handle. Use an Allen wrench or screwdriver to remove the handle and expose the cartridge.

You’ll see a retaining nut or a U-clip holding the cartridge in place. Carefully loosen it with a wrench or pull the clip out, depending on your faucet type.

Grip the old cartridge with pliers and pull it straight out. It might be snug—wiggle it gently if needed, but don’t twist too much.

Pro Tip: Every cartridge is different.  Bring the cartridge to a hardware store to get the exact replacement. Common brands like Moen, Delta, and Kohler all use different sizes and shapes.

Apply plumber’s grease to the rubber O-rings on your new cartridge. Then slide it in, making sure it lines up properly. Reattach the nut or clip to secure it in place.  Besure to read the directions that come with your new cartridge.  Some brands have a different cartridge for the hot side and the cold side and some brands use the same cartridge on both sides.

Put the handle back on, turn your water supply back on, and test your faucet. If there’s no more dripping—congrats! You just handled a faucet repair like a pro.
