War Eagles cage Tigers
CONROE, Texas - The Oak Ridge boys basketball looked to continue on improving their prospects of postseason play as the War Eagles hosted Conroe on Friday night.
Oak Ridge outscores Conroe 21-6 in 3rd quarter
In the first quarter, Oak Ridge came out red hot as Josh Myers hit two quick three-pointers giving the War Eagles a 15-6 lead, just under 3:00 minutes into the game. Conroe would respond by closing the quarter on a 11-5 run, that saw the Oak Ridge lead trimmed down to a single possession at 20-17 at the end of the first quarter.
Oak Ridge (17-11, 4-5) re-gained the momentum early in the second quarter as the War Eagle defense held Conroe to 0-for-4 and two turnovers in the Tigers first six possessions of the second quarter, as Richard Wilson, Josh Myers and Tanner Doyel hit three-point baskets, keying a Oak Ridge 11-0 run to start the quarter.
Conroe would again respond with a 9-3 run, however another Tanner Doyel three-pointer would end the threat as Oak Ridge went into the locker room with a 40-30 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Oak Ridge, began to make a statement, as the War Eagles outscored Conroe 21-6 in the third quarter. Josh Myers hits another three, Cameron Prejean with a steal and a runaway dunk gives the War Eagles a 49-30 lead with 5:45 left in the 3rd quarter.
Things begin to get a little chippy, as Conroe guard Steadman Bell, gets a little frustrated with Josh Caldwell’s aggressive play. Bell is accessed two quick technical fouls and is ejected. Caldwell also was hit with a technical. Oak Ridge hits 1-of-2 free throws and Trumaine Jefferson hits a three to blow the doors open as the War Eagles had a 22-point lead at 55-33 with just over 2:00 left.
The War Eagles finish out the final period without a challenge from Conroe as Oak Ridge makes a statement tonight against Conroe with a 65-50 district home win. With the win the War Eagles improve to 17-11 overall, 4-5 in district play and will travel to A&M Consolidated on Tuesday, February 4.
