HS Basketball: College Park Starts Off 2022 With a Dominating Performance Against Oak Ridge

THE WOODLANDS – After what seemed like a year, the holiday break is finally over and time for some district basketball. This week, College Park takes on Oak Ridge, The Woodlands faces Conroe, and Willis will play the district leader Grand Oaks. College Park looks to keep their undefeated streak alive while Oak Ridge tries to add another win to their record.

Oak Ridge had home court advantage but College Park came out with a pace that couldn’t be matched. The court advantage didn’t matter in this situation as the Cavaliers ran through the War Eagle defense like they were standing still. While Oak Ridge struggled to find the basket, their offense was getting stopped as well by the brick walls put up by the College Park defense. By the end of the first Ty Buckman (#11) posted up 7 points which was more than Oak Ridge had by the first buzzer.

College Park didn’t skip a beat in the second quarter and continued to press the Oak Ridge offense up and down the court. The War Eagles struggled shooting as well as moving the ball due to the passing laned being shut down by the Cavalier defense. College Park also continued to keep pressure which forced many turnovers throughout the second and the game. Although dominate, the Cavaliers would foul the War Eagles on several occasions resulting in 5 out of the 9 points scored in the second quarter came from the free-throw line. At halftime College Park was leading by a landslide, 43-15.

As the buzzer sounded for the second half, College Park continued the momentum and once again forced many turnovers which they capitalized on. Led by Jordan Darjean (#2) and Darel Reece (#4), College Park would once again run the boards and post up another 17 points in the 3rd increasing their lead 60-21. Oak Ridge at this point had no answer to the brutal offensive attack by College Park. Also, by closing down the passing lanes, Oak Ridge didn’t have a way to get plays set to make baskets resulting in more turnovers and forced shots on goal.

In the final quarter College Park seemed to start getting sloppy by dropping coverage as well as struggling on rebounds and fouling in the paint. Oak Ridge would go to have their biggest quarter of the night with 15 points. Richard Adewale-safa (#15) would be the top scorer for Oak Ridge with 15 total points in the game but it wouldn’t be enough. Although College Park struggled to keep their composure, they continued their dominance and racked up another 21 points in the 4th and final quarter. Oak Ridge would fall to College Park 81-36.
