Overnight house fire leaves one in critical condition, motorist arrested after attempting to drive through fire scene

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- Just before 9pm Wednesday night, Caney Creek, Porter, and New Caney Firefighters responded to reports of a residential fire in the 15000 block of Old Houston Rd in southeast Montgomery County.

The first engine arrived within 5 minutes of the 911 call, reporting heavy fire conditions in a mobile home and two injured residents. Fire and EMS crews quickly went about caring for the victims and controlling the fire. The injured residents were a 54 yr old man and his 46 yr old wife.

A passerby had spotted the fire and was able to reach the female, who was unable to escape due to a previous medical condition. She was found to be suffering burns to her upper body affecting her airway and she was transported by MCHD EMS to a burn center in the Houston Medical Center in critical condition. Her husband was treated on scene for his injuries but declined to be transported to a hospital.

Montgomery County Fire Marshals Officers were on scene conducting a fire investigation when 21 yr old Jose Campos attempted to drive through the blockaded emergency scene. A Fire Marshal Officer stopped the driver and immediately detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver was detained and a search of his vehicle yielded THC wax, marijuana, and a substance suspected to be LSD. Campos was arrested by the MCFMO for felony possession of a controlled substance. MCSO Deputies on scene transported Campos to jail while MCFMO Officers continued their investigation into the cause of the fire.

The initial fire investigation revealed that the victims did not have electricity in the home and were using a candle for light. The female resident reportedly fell and knocked over the candle igniting a fire which prevented her escape.
