THE WOODLANDS, TX --

Softball

The Woodlands 9, Cypress Woods 4 (TWHS leads 1-0)

The Highlanders took control of Game 1 early and now they’re in control of the series with a trip to the Regional Semifinals just one win away.

The bat of Haley Mountain was a weapon for The Woodlands on Thursday night. Mountain hit a pair of two-run home runs, one in the first inning and another in the third, to match Cy Woods’ run total by herself. Mountain finished 3-4 with four RBIs.

The Woodlands led 6-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning after Alannah Leach singled to score a run. This is where the game took an interesting turn. The Wildcats grabbed a run in the fourth, then in the bottom of the fifth, hit a three-run home run to make the Highlanders sweat for the first time all night.

Cy Woods had their eyes on a comeback, but Leach put an end to that with a two-run RBI double off the left-field wall to give The Woodlands breathing room again. Kiara Wiedenhaupt restored the five-run lead with an RBI single to wrap up the scoring for the night.

Saylor Davis allowed six hits and struck out four in the complete-game win.

Game 2 is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday at Cypress Park HS.

Baseball

The Woodlands 5, Cypress Ranch 0 (TWHS leads 1-0)

Just like the softball team, the Highlanders baseball team also took a 1-0 series lead after a five-run win on Thursday. The Woodlands was led by Dylan Kerbow’s strong performance on the mound. Kerbow struck out 11 batters and allowed just four hits in the complete-game shutout.

Kerbow was also 2-4 with three RBIs as a hitter. Conner Doucet was also 2-4 in the win.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7:30 on Friday at Scotland Yard.

Tomball Memorial 5, Grand Oaks 0 (TMHS leads 1-0)

Grand Oaks was held to just three hits on Thursday. Sloan Laird (2-3) and Antonio Sabala (1-3) were the only Grizzlies to get a hit in the loss.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday at Tomball Memorial HS

Bridgeland 5, College Park 1 (BHS leads 1-0)

The Cavaliers were also held to three hits in their loss to the Bears on Thursday. Holden Rook (1-2) was responsible for College Park’s lone run with a sac fly in the seventh inning.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday at College Park HS

Tomball 10, Oak Ridge 3 (THS leads 1-0)

The War Eagles led 3-2 in the fifth inning, but the Cougars scored eight runs in the sixth to stun Oak Ridge on Thursday.

Azais Garza and Seth Henry each went 1-2 to lead the team in hits.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday at Oak Ridge HS
