THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Grand Oaks Lady Grizzlies hosted the Conroe Lady Tigers at home for a decision match up to see who will lead the district. Conroe has been dominating the district with their aggressive and speedy play while Grand Oaks defense is a brick wall stopping drives and shutting down driving lanes. Tonight, both teams came out swinging as they fought for buckets on each end of the court.

Grand Oaks came out with absolute fire in the first dominating the boards and gaining a quick lead. Conroe struggled to find the basket in the first couple of minutes, being stopped by the brick wall put up by the Lady Grizzlies. Kylee Myers (#12), the six-foot Grand Oaks guard, popped off in the first by dropping 10 of the 18 points scored. This gave Grand Oaks a strong lead as the buzzer sounded.

The Lady Grizzlies continued to dominate the boards as they increased the aggression and attacked the paint. They were closing down the Conroe offence and forcing personal fouls and eventually some technical fouls on their defense. Bree Riley (#11), the Grand Oaks freshman, hit the line for both techs giving her an 8-point quarter. Grand Oaks increased their lead as the halftime buzzer sounded. Going into the half, Grand Oaks led Conroe 31-18.

Going into the second half head coach Shiakiea Carter, of Grand Oaks, wanted her girls to stick to the game plan. “There’s a game plan every week, but just really its just compete and stay within what we do. We just have to make minor adjustments and us making minor adjustments we just come through.”

In the second half the Grand Oaks Lady Grizzlies stuck to the game plan and made those minor adjustments as they kept the aggression and pressure on Conroe. With the brick wall in place Conroe had a difficult time making baskets and with the Grand Oaks pressure, they also had a hard time making plays. This resulted in many turnovers which the Lady Grizzlies were able to capitalize on.

The final quarter is where Conroe and Grand Oaks popped off, exchanging 3-pointers and battling for the lead. The accumulation of points gave Grand Oaks a comfortable lead but the Lady Tigers made an effort in the fourth to come back. This was their hardest hitting and highest scoring quarter with 25. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as the Lady Grizzlies defeated them 61 to 48. Credit to Kennedy Powell (#11), the Conroe senior, for being the top scorer in the game with a massive 19 points.
