MAGNOLIA, TX – Only being open for a couple of years, Grand Oaks has made a statement in the area and district circuit throughout all the high school sports. It takes some schools years to develop a winning strategy and team but for the Grizzlies, it came out of necessity. The Woodlands and College Park dominate the district and in order to survive any rounds, teams must play on that level. For Grand Oaks it came quickly, as the Girls Basketball Team found themselves in the third round of the UIL 6A Girls Basketball Playoffs. This is a mark in a young school’s history that some schools haven’t achieved in years and some in decades.

Head coach Shiakiea Carter motivated her team to realize they deserve to be here. In the playoffs against teams in the later rounds, girls are faced with bigger and stronger opponents. This was no different as Tomball Memorial came out aggressive from the tipoff. Their pace and rhythmic passing between players was on a different level. Grand Oaks found themselves against a 7-1 run 4 minutes into the 1st quarter as each team warmed up to each other.

As the half continued, the Tomball Memorial Wildcats put up a brick wall against Grand Oaks and a lid on the basket. Grand Oaks was able to see great shots but the rim had a different plan. It spit out and blocked many looks from the Grizzlies which Tomball Memorial capitalized on at the other end of the court. Halftime marked one of the largest deficits in this season for Grand Oaks, 25-11.

The 3rd and 4th quarter unfortunately turned out the same for Grand Oaks but as they take a loss in the playoffs, they made school history making it to the 3rd round. Their only colleagues to surpass them are the Conroe Lady Tigers who made it to a blistering round 4. This is the first time in their school history in over a decade. Tomball Memorial moves on to round 4 as Grand Oaks hits the gym and prepares for another playoff run next season.
