HOUSTON, TX – Grand Oaks has already made history in its short years as a 6A school and in the district. They have proven throughout their athletic program that they are here to stay and match up against the best of the best. From football to basketball, the Grand Oaks Grizzlies have already brought school tradition and another competitor to the district circuit.

The Grand Oaks Lady Grizzlies have been dominating the district as well as the post season by working as a team and keeping the momentum throughout the game. Cy-Ranch has been their toughest opponent yet in the playoffs and tonight showed the Grizzlies the future of the playoffs. They will need to fight to advance and keep the momentum even when trailing. Cy-Ranch didn’t let up and continued to crash the boards from the paint and from downtown. It was a back and forward showdown with Grand Oaks trailing for the majority of the first half. As they went into the locker room Cy-Ranch was ahead 19-16.

Lead by head coach Shiakiea Carter, Grand Oaks had to step it up in the second half if they wanted to move on to the next round. Coach Carter said, “We are a second half team,” to inspire the relatively young varsity team, as many senior graduated last year.

The final half was a battle for the lead as both teams fought for baskets to give them that much more of an advantage. As time clicked away, Grand Oaks kicked it into a different gear and started heating up as Cy-Ranch started to gas out and cool down. The Lady Grizzlies shut down the passing lanes and capitalized on turnovers to finally give them the lead late in the 4th quarter. It came down to the final seconds but Grand Oaks was able to pull off the victory and advance to the Regional Quarterfinals for the first time in school history. Final score, Grand Oaks 47, Cy-Ranch 44.
