September is Suicide Awareness Month

Linkedin

While designating specific months like September as Suicide Awareness Month can help draw attention to the issue and provide a focused opportunity for education and advocacy, it's critical to continue these efforts each day.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2020:

  • For middle and high school age youth (ages 12-18), suicide was the 2nd leading cause of death.
  • Montgomery County has consistently had the highest suicide rate in the area over the past two decades.

Mental health can affect our youth year-round and requires ongoing attention and support. It has been especially difficult in recent years for youth because of social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

At YES to YOUTH, our crisis intervention staff is available 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, to handle emergency and immediate crisis situations such as suicidal ideation. Our 24/7 crisis intervention hotline is 888-756-8682.

YES to YOUTH's professional staff also provides individual and family crisis counseling for individuals and their families. They address many types of mental health issues with youth, like depression and anxiety associated with family conflicts, such as behavior problems, communication, coping with divorce or other loss, parent and child relationships, peer and school problems, roles and expectations, runaway behaviors, truancy, and much more.

So, while September may serve as a reminder and a time for concentrated efforts, it's essential to keep the conversation and action going throughout the entire year to make a lasting impact on suicide prevention and mental health support.

We are excited to invite you to the 2023 “The Maggert” golf tournament, benefiting YES to YOUTH – Montgomery County Youth Services, on Monday, October 30, 2023, at The Tournament Course (formerly TPC) at The Woodlands Country Club.

This cornerstone fundraising event raises critical funds to support our mission to strengthen the emotional and mental health development of youth and families by providing crisis intervention, counseling, and suicide prevention services. Our BridgeWay Shelter provides a safe and nurturing home where abused, battered, sex-trafficked, homeless, and at-risk youth begin healing from the past and become empowered for the future.

Join us for a gorgeous day of golf while also supporting our youth. This year’s tournament will be a 4-person scramble. Your sponsorship provides an all-inclusive experience - great golf, delectable food from some of The Woodlands’ finest restaurants, beverages for the day, and an enviable swag bag for each golfer.

There is truly something for everyone! Thank you for supporting YES to YOUTH!

Employees from Hotchkiss Insurance, led by Chase Fondren, volunteered to paint the remaining rooms at our BridgeWay Emergency Youth Shelter, and they did an amazing job! Your help was so important to this project!

A BIG thank you to C & J Pro Wash for giving our basketball court at BridgeWay Emergency Youth Shelter a sparkling makeover! Your power-washing skills have taken our court from drab to fab, and we can't wait to shoot some hoops on this clean surface. Your hard work and dedication to making our space awesome are truly appreciated!
