Winter earwigs pose no harm to humans. Despite an earwigs intimidating appearance, earwigs are an interesting and ecologically important group of insects. In the ecosystem, earwigs aid with soil aeration and as predators of harmful insects.
Earwigs are recognizable by their elongated bodies and characteristic pincers at the end of their abdomen. Earwigs vary in size, usually measuring from 5 to 25 mm in length. Flattened bodies help them squeeze into tight spaces. The pincers are more curved in males than females.
Finding earwigs in your home during winter is surprising to some people. People usually find them outside in warmer weather. However there are a few reasons why you might be encountering earwigs during the winter:
- Seeking shelter
- Accidental entry
- Moisture seeking
- Food sources
Earwigs prefer dark, moist environments. You commonly find them under rocks, in mulch, and inside tree trunks.
Earwigs seek shelter when the weather gets cold. Earwigs often enter homes through small cracks and openings in search of a warm place to overwinter. Inside, they find conditions that are more favorable for survival compared to the harsh outdoor environment. You can find winter earwigs in bathrooms and other damp, humid areas.
Sometimes, earwigs may accidentally wander into homes. You can bring them in on firewood, outdoor furniture, or plants that you are moving indoors for the winter.
Moisture attracts earwigs, and they may enter homes in search of water sources. Areas of your home that are humid or have moisture problems can attract these pests.
Earwigs eat plants and bugs, but in winter, when there's not much outside, they might come inside looking for food.

- Seal cracks and openings around doors, windows and the foundation.
- Reduce moisture in and around your home by fixing leaks and ensuring proper ventilation
- Keep the perimeter of your house clear of leaves, mulch and other organic debris.
- Regularly inspect and clean areas where earwigs are likely to hide, such as under sinks or in garages.
