MUMFORD, Texas — The Woodlands softball team gathered around home plate as Kelcy Leach ran to meet them after her game winning home run in the bottom of the eighth against Lake Travis, bringing the girls one step closer to State.

The Woodlands beat Lake Travis 5-4 after a hard fought game. The Lady Highlanders were ahead 3-0 until the top of the fourth when a home run put two runs on the board for the Cavaliers. In the bottom of the sixth, Kelcy Leach came up to the plate with her first home run of the game and brought the score to 4-2, but in the top of the seventh, two more runs for Lake Travis tied up the game.

“We told the girls last night and again today when you get to this point in the playoffs, all the teams are good,” Head Coach Richard Jorgensen said. “Even though we won 7-0 and were in complete control and threw a one-hitter last night, they were going to come out ready to play, and we knew they were going to come after us.”

Kelcy Leach’s second home run in the bottom of the extra inning brought the game to a close and put the Lady Highlanders in good spirits.

“It’s never a one person thing,” Leach said. “It’s definitely a team effort, and all the other runs were from my team, and I’m just happy I got the pitch that I wanted and I just stayed with it, and I’m happy the outcome came out how it was.”

The Lady Highlanders will play next weekend in Austin.
