Caney Creek Football ready to bounce back after bye week
THE WOODLANDS, Texas— The Caney Creek Panthers will host the Tomball Cougars Friday, Oct. 5 at Moorhead Stadium. The Panthers will hit the field after last week's bye week, two weeks removed from their 70-point loss to College Station High School.
Second-year starting quarterback Julian Hernandez will lead the Panthers offense this week. The 5’9’’ senior has provided many highlights over the past two seasons; certainly, a player to keep an eye out for against Tomball. He and backup quarterback Cody Fay offer a unique style of offense, with Fay lining up all over the field for the Panthers. In the backfield with Hernandez, tailbacks Gabe Garcia and Spencer Brandon have combined for eight touchdowns already this season with four scores apiece.
The Panthers currently sit at 2-2, with a district record of 0-1. Already matching their win total from the previous three seasons, Friday night’s game against Tomball gives Caney Creek an opportunity at three wins in a season for the first time since 2014.
Tomball’s offense is filled with playmakers at every position. Leading signal caller Hunter Dunn likes to spread the ball around in an uptempo offense. Lining up in the backfield with Dunn is junior Ja’kobi Holland Jr. and leading receiver Jay’ris Smith on the outside.
The 2017 season for the Cougars started red hot, winning their first four games, and outscoring opponents 132-38. 2018 hasn’t been as kind for the Cougars, only scoring 30-plus points once this season in a 31-21 win over Port Neches-Groves.
