The Grand Oaks Grizzles and The College Park Cavaliers both competed in their first district 13-6A game of the season Tuesday Night at College Park High School. The Grizzlies would take down the Cavaliers in four sets: 25-8, 23-25, 25-12, 25-19.

Tensions were high during the pregame of the competition. Each team had their game faces on with a district win in mind, the modern lyrical mastermind “Da Baby” blasted the gym, allowing the players on both sides to complete their pregame mediations and ready for the coming competition. If not the music, then it was the roaring crowd of Cavalier students and parents alike raising the decimal level of the gym. If you could see energy, then you would see the Cavalier student section and the many Grand Oaks fans.

The Cavaliers quickly found themselves on the board by scoring off two of their first sets. All looked good for the Cavaliers until the Grizzlies found their momentum. The story of the night quickly became the Grizzlies taking the lead and the Cavaliers meticulously bringing the score closer. Though, in all four of the sets played tonight, the Cavaliers would only be able to pull off a single set win. Hence, the Cavaliers take a step forward, and the Grizzlies take two more.

The Grizzlies in the first set had a commanding presence with kills and blocks coming at fiery pace. Though, the Cavalier student section was loud in their ears, that didn’t deter these young ladies. #11 for Grand Oak’s, Jaela Aguste, played with heart and determination that was exemplified through her great play.

The second set saw the Cavaliers take the win. Though, the Grizzlies certainly didn’t let up easily. It was a back-and-forth battle, but the Cavaliers pulled out a 25-23 set win.

After that hard fought set, the Grizzlies would kick it into high gear and win the third set 25-12. What was very noticeable in this set was the wall of blockers the Grizzlies had. What you would think to be a kill, quickly was diminished, and fall onto the Cavaliers side of the court.

The fourth set proved to a be another hard-fought set like in the second. Each team kept answering back until late in the set and the Grizzlies would take a hard lead. This set would end 25-19.

In the end, the Grizzlies won because they made less mistakes than the Cavaliers. Both teams showed areas of excellence. It will be exciting to see how both these teams compete the rest of the season.

This was actually not the first time the Cavaliers and Grizzlies had faced off against each other this year. They had played against each other in a tournament a few weeks ago, where the Cavaliers would sweep the tournament sets. Coach Rodgers obviously already knew what team she was playing at took what she learned from that game and implemented a plan that would solidify a district win Tuesday.

“It was great win, we knew coming in this would be a great battle again after previously playing them, I’m really proud of my team for stepping up in those tight circumstances. It was really awesome”.

Along with Grand Oaks, The Woodlands, Conroe, and Willis also defeated their opponents in their District opener. Conroe continues to go undefeated in the season.
