Why should I take DHA while pregnant?
To understand why, we must understand what DHA is. DHA stands for docosahexaenoic acid, it is part of the Omega-3 family. Omega-3's are a family of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential nutrients for health and development. Unfortunately the human body does not synthesize Omega-3's and must obtain them through food sources (fish, algae, and flax seed) and/or supplementation. There is 2 important parts of Omega-3 fatty acids, 1. EPA known to help support the heart, immune system and inflammatory response. 2. DHA known to support the brain, eyes, and central nervous system (CNS).
How does DHA support baby's development?
DHA is especially important during the third trimester when the baby's brain development is at it's peak. According to the NCBI, "during the last trimester, the fetus accrues about 50 to 70mg of DHA per day." This helps with visual, neural function, and neurotransmitter metabolism.
Does this mean I should not supplement with a fish oil that has EPA and DHA while pregnant?
No, it is good to have a healthy balance of EPA and DHA throughout your pregnancy.  EPA is important for the uptake of DHA, which has been shown to increase cord blood DHA levels in order to gain entry into placental and fetal cells. This is why Nordic Naturals has not only put DHA in there prenatal DHA gummy but also put a small amount of EPA to support proper balance and uptake of DHA.
