Weather Alert – National Weather Service extends excessive heat warning through Wednesday
The Houston / Galveston office of the National Weather Service has announced a heat advisory extension, plus the addition of an excessive heat warning, both of which went into effect at 10 o’clock this morning will remain in effect until 10 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.
For the heat advisory, the heat index will contain values up to 112 degrees. For the excessive heat warning, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 115 are expected. The ‘natural’ high temperatures, without factoring the humidity-based heat index, will be 102 today and 100 tomorrow; though these temps are high, they by no means a record.
The alerts affect portions of south central and southeast Texas, including all of The Woodlands area. While the overnight temperatures will fall below criteria for the Excessive Heat Warning and the Heat Advisory, there will not be much time for recovery from the significant daytime heating; therefore, the Excessive Heat Warning and the Heat Advisory will continue through the nighttime hours Tuesday.
To protect yourself from the heat, drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency; call 911 if you or anyone you see exhibits symptoms.
