THE WOODLANDS, Texas---The transition from coach Richard Carson to Coach Lonnie Madison has been well documented, but over the weekend at Meet the Cavaliers, it was refreshing seeing a brand new offense and defense in action. If you’ve seen a College Park High School football game during the Carson era you’re used to seeing the same couple of offensive plays over and over again. What I saw Saturday was something that would drop the biggest skeptic’s jaw.

Cavaliers, we have ourselves a quarterback

I graduated from College Park in 2011 and have paid attention to the football team since 2007, and I have never seen a Quarterback with the smarts, size, strength, and cannon of an arm like junior Jake Hunnicut possesses. The kid was making throws that I’ve never a former quarterback complete. Hunnicut has a great base and when he has to scramble, he can complete passes on the run. The Cavaliers have a big reason to be optimistic about this season, and we will see how Hunnicut plays against his coach’s former team, the Klein Collins Tigers.

The bigger the better

Watching the receivers lineup, I noticed something before the play even started. The batch of receivers this year are some of the tallest and most athletic that this school has really seen before. Players such as Sebastian Cos, Peyton Sobosle, and Max Bowman are weapons that Coach Madison can use to help Hunnicut move down the field, but also it gives Hunnicut red zone targets that are hard to miss. The height and athleticism of these these receivers are qualities that the school has rarely had the opportunity of watching on their team.

Linemen the size of Texas

Coach Madison mentioned in his conversation with us here at Woodlands Online that this team has something it hasn’t had in a long time. That “something” is size. Specifically, along the offensive line. I can second Coach Lonnie Madison on this, as watching these guys in person was refreshing. It seemed like they were opening hole after hole for the Running Back Travis Washburn. The pass protection was pretty good as well. The Offensive Line allowed a few hits on Hunnicut and allowed a few tackles for loss on Washburn, but I believe those will be fixed by the time the Cavaliers travel to Pasadena on September 2nd.

The defense could be the best since 07-08

On top of bringing in a brand new system Coach Madison has been blessed with playmakers everywhere on the defensive side of the ball. With players such as Strong Safety Cooper Lucas, Cornerback Adam Myers, Defensive End Austin Fox, and Linebacker Casen Holden highlighting the defense, Madison has a lot of speed and athleticism to work with on this defense. The Cavaliers start their season against some high powered offenses in Pasadena Memorial, Klein, Deer Park, and A&M Consolidated. It will be very interesting to see how effective these playmakers can be effective against these tough offenses out of the gate.
