THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Two Conroe ISD high school softball teams started their quest for a state championship Thursday night. The district 16-6A third seed Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles (18-11-2) played the Montgomery Lady Bears (19-6) and the fourth seed The Woodlands Lady Highlanders (21-9) faced the Klein Oak Lady Panthers (21-7).

Oak Ridge vs. Montgomery

The Lady War Eagles defeated the Montgomery Lady Bears 4-3 on a walk-off wild pitch by Montgomery pitcher Katy Simon, scoring Aiyana Freeney from third. The Oak Ridge starting pitcher, Autumn Sydlik went 5 full innings, giving up only 2 hits and 2 runs. Carlie Darnell came in to relieve Sydlik allowing 1 run.

The leader on offense for the War Eagles was senior Amanda Cunniff who went 2 for 3. The four runs were scored Cheyenne Cavanaugh, Freeney, Kylie Hunt, and Alicia Hill. The Lady War Eagles move on to the second round of the playoffs where they will face the winner of Bowie and Rouse.

Klein Oak vs. The Woodlands

Great pitching by Emily Langkamp led the Lady Highlanders to a 3-0 win in game one of a three game series over Klein Oak, the undefeated district 15-6A champions.

Langkamp pitched a complete game, one hitter and struck out four Lady Panthers, and she also homered in the top of the sixth inning to give The Woodlands the 3-0 lead. Six Lady Highlanders each had one hit on Klein Oak pitcher Taylor Makowsky.

Game two of the series will be played Friday, April 29th at 4 p.m. at Tomball High School. Game three, if needed, will be on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner of this series will move on to play Hays or Round Rock Westwood in round two.
