College Football: A Freshman Lagway Shines in First Collegiate Start
GAINESVILLE, FL -- University of Florida freshman and former Willis Wildkat, D.J. Lagway shows out in his first collegiate start in the Gators' 45-7 win over Samford.
After normal starter Graham Mertz was sidelined in week one's loss to Miami with a concussion, Lagway was called upon to start in Florida's tune-up game against the Samford Bulldogs.
It took little time for the freshman to acclimate to the speed of the college level. Lagway started the matchup by going 6/6 with 163 yards before his first incompletion. Deep throws to the speedy Gator receivers did well for Florida's success throughout the game, ending in a 45-7 win that brought the team to .500.
Most impressive about Lagway's performance was that he ended up leading all quarterbacks in passing yards for the weekend. A final stat line of 18/25 with 456 passing yards, and 3 touchdowns was good enough for Lagway to become the headlining act for all collegiate QBs during week two.
With Lagway's performance putting many on notice while appeasing agitated Gator fans, it is reasonable to expect the freshman to continue starting before the gauntlet of Florida's schedule bears down on the team.
